Sizing Tip - Its best to use your discretion here a little. Kids (they are often a bit more agile) or people with a bit of previous ocean experience are generally best suited to the higher end of the recommended weight scale. Adults or Complete learners are probably best suited towards the lower end of the weight scale.

Softlite Koolite – The Ultimate Soft Top Mini Mal for Learning to Surf!

The Koolite uses a classic mal shape, but we've given it a few tweaks to make it the easiest board possible to learn to surf on!

Shape-wise, it features a slightly wider tail, which greatly aids stability, particularly in smaller waves. We've also given it a bit of extra width and thickness to increase overall volume, ensuring it paddles fast (helps you get into waves easier) and is nice and stable once up and riding

Construction-wise, it utilizes our traditional Softboard Construction Style, which is soft, safe, durable & generally perfect for learning on. This consists of an EPS Core, strengthened with wood stringers, which are then encapsulated by a soft IXLPE Deck & rigid HD Slick.

Just to make your life that little bit easier, we've also included a Carry Handle to make transportation of you board a breeze too.

Softlite Koolite Range


The Koolite is the ultimate beginner board, and is perfect for the early stages of learning to surf.  It uses a similar template to our Chop Stick Range, but the main difference is that we've given the Koolite some extra thickness to bump up the volume.

This basically means it has a lot more float making it even more super stable, and easier to paddle. This will help you stand up in even the smallest and weakest of waves. 

We wouldn't really recommend this board for advanced surfer or good quality waves, but we did test it out in some just in case.. (see clip below)

Key Features

Mini Mal Template

The Koolite uses a Mini Mal shape. This is ideal for learning as having a rounder nose and width through the tail creates for some extra surface area, greatly increasing the stability of the board.

This shape is also best suited to smaller, weaker waves which is ideally what you should be looking for while you are learning to surf.

THICK CORE

While many of our other models are a touch thinner, traditionally thicker is better when you are learning to surf, so we've kept the Koolite nice and thick.

This basically means it has a lot more float making it even more stable, and easier to paddle. This will help you stand up in even the smallest and weakest of waves.

Carry Handle

Learning to Surf is hard enough, so we want to help out where we can!

With the extra width and thickness, this board can get a little hard to carry, so we've added a carry handle to make you trips to and from the beach just that little bit easier..

Moulded Cores

We have created and refined our moulds in collaboration with our team riders an renowned surfboard shapers.


Using mould ensures that every board comes out identical with no imperfections. It also creates a harder shell of EPS foam on the outside making Softlite boards stiffer and more durable than competitors who use similar cores.

Fin System

With this system it is extremely easy to install and remove fins. It is compatible with other fin two tab systems, allowing you to change your fins to suit conditions or alter board performance.

bamboo X Epoxy stringer system

We use Bamboo Stringers, re-enforced with fibreglass sheeting and epoxy resin to give the perfect amount of flex, and greatly decreasing the chance of snapped boards.

The introduction of this technology has meant we've had very few snapped boards!
